Guwahati, Oct. 2: A 16-year-old differently abled boy from the city will participate in the World Winter Games to be held in Austria from March 14 to March 25 next year.
The Northeast coordinator of Special Olympics Bharat (SOB), Anjana Goswami, said Rohan Ho has qualified to participate in floorball competition in the World Winter Games.
The SOB is a national sports federation accredited by the Special Olympics International to conduct Special Olympics programmes in India. It is recognised by the government of India as a federation dedicated to development of sports for persons with intellectual disabilities.
“He was selected on the basis of his performance at the qualifiers held at Himachal Pradesh recently,” Goswami said.
Rohan, who resides near Down Town Hospital here, is mentally challenged with hearing impairment. He will be the sole participant from Assam in the games.
Rohan is currently studying computers and undergoing sports training at Ashadeep – an organisation that works in the field of mental health in the Northeast with special focus on psycho-social rehabilitation for persons with mental illness.
Goswami said a painting, jointly done by Partha Sarathi Sinha, an autistic youth from Guwahati, renowned artist Meghali Deka and South Kamrup deputy commissioner Rajib Prakash Baruah, will be displayed at the United Nations in New York and in Graz in Austria in the run-up to the World Winter Games.
She said the painting was made under Inclusive Painting Project of Special Olympics Bharat, Assam chapter, at Guwahati circuit house on September 30 to create awareness about social integration of differently abled people.
